Here are over 300 years of uniforms of regiments of the British army – from the Restoration (Charles II in 1660) to 1960 and beyond.

Here you can see double images of uniforms of officers of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines between 1787 and 1825 (just before and after the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805). [There are no images of sailers’, or ratings’, uniforms during this period because ratings wore no uniforms until 1857, only the dress (“slops”) they wore when “pressed” or supplied by the contractors who supplied the crews].

Here you can see two large (45 x 58 cm) full colour lithographs of the Earl of Cardigan (11th Hussars) and Captain Morris (17th Lancers) of the Light Brigade – both mounted and in full dress (full dress was normal dress for battle).

You can also see a series of images made as aquatints by Thomas Rowlandson in 1795 of volunteers from different parts of London during the ongoing emergency following the French Revolution and the perceived threat of invasion.
