Description

This is a general (agricultural) purpose, single crank, compound, Devonshire type traction engine of 6 n h p designed specifically for an Essex farmer owner. The engine was equipped with cleats of steel (known as ‘˜spuds’ in Essex) which can be clipped to the driving wheels at regular intervals around the rim to enable the machine to operate in heavy clay. By 1900 Charles Burrell & Sons of Thetford in Norfolk was a 200-year-old agricultural machinery manufacturer. Begun in 1700 by James Burrell a master smith it grew into a major manufacturer of traction engines, agricultural machinery, steam trucks wagons and tram engines, thriving until the internal combustion engine took over from steam power. Burrell’s finally went out of business in 1924 when sales of engines had collapsed following the Great War and amid growing competition. When the book for which this plate was published in 1961, this engine had been in continuous employment since it was new. Finem Rescipe may still be viewed working at rallies and shows throughout East Anglia.
