These prints were published in 1972 by Hugh Evelyn from original prints by Thomas Rowlandson first published in London by Rudolf Ackerman in 1799 . The prints are c 25.5 x 33.5 cm (10” x 13 ¾”). (Actual size may vary according to the bookbinder’s cut). The images on the prints are 20.5 x 25.5 cm (8” x 10”) on light greyish orange background (c. RGB fcf0e6) impressed on high white matt cartridge paper weighing c. 120 g/m² leaving a slight indent on the paper. Shown here are scans of the plates.

The Artist and Publisher

The chromolithographs you see here (published in 1972) are the first reprint of the famous aquatints produced for Rudolf Ackermann (1764-1834) by Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827). Rudolf Ackermann was an Anglo-German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher, and businessman. Born in Saxony, Germany, after training as a coach builder and working in France and Belgium he came to London, the centre of the coachbuilding trade, where he married an Englishwoman and settled. Among his clients as a coach builder was George Washington. He was fascinated by the mechanics of printing and set up his own lithographic press in the Strand in London in 1795.

Thomas Rowlandson was an English artist and caricaturist of the Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. A prolific artist and print maker, Rowlandson produced a wide variety of illustrations for novels, joke books, and topographical works. It is not certain when Rowlandson produced these drawings for Ackermann who by now had a thriving printing and publishing business. 1797-8 is a probable date. Rowlandson is well-known for his drawings of crowded scenes, so these drawings of the Loyal Volunteers were no great challenge, but they demonstrate his economy of line in creating graceful, solid figures. Ackermann liked Rowlandson’s work and had faith in his ability. These drawings may be regarded as the best aquatints that his colour plate process produced. The plates were published over a period of months from 1798; the first bound volume of plates was published on 12th August 1799. This was a time when patriotic zeal was running at a high level after the French Revolution and the ascent of Napoleon. Under threat of invasion from France the popularity of the Volunteers, indeed of any military men, reached its zenith. Ackerman saw this as an opportunity for a work with a ready market amongst those responsible for raising the Volunteers.
