The Race was scheduled to be held in 1914 and Resolute was launched by Grace Vanderbilt that April preparatory for trial races against Vanitie and Defiance off Sandy Hook, New York. The last Cup defender to be designed by Herreshoff, Resolute was a yacht owned by a syndicate of New York Yacht Club members headed by Henry Walters to contend the 1914 America’s Cup. Unfortunately, the outbreak of War in Europe required the race to postponed until 1920. Shamrock IV was a yacht owned by Sir Thomas Lipton and designed by Charles Ernest Nicholson. She was the unsuccessful challenger in the 1920 America’s Cup.
