Description

The 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards was a cavalry regiment of the British Army formed in 1922 by the amalgamation of the 5th Dragoon Guards (Princess Charlotte of Wales’s) and the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons. It served in the Second World War and the Korean War. In August 1992, because of the Options for Change defence cuts, the regiment was amalgamated with the 4th/7th Royal Dragoon Guards to form the Royal Dragoon Guards. This picture shows a cavalryman in the 1960’s. His cap badge came from the 5th, his collar badge from the 6th, his green trousers from the green facings of the 5th, the yellow edging on his shoulder belt from the facing colour of the 6th; so that although this new uniform appears to break with tradition it does in fact carry it on. The shoulder chains were added by the cavalry to their blue coats during the Boer war and were, in 1960, the distinguishing mark of the cavalryman.
