Published 1966 © Hugh Evelyn these big, rich, colourful lithographs of armorial images were drawn by John Mollo (1931-2017).  They are c 37 x 54 cm (14 ½ ″ x 21 ¼ ″) and printed on heavy high white matt cartridge paper (157 gm/sm²).  The predominate colours are heraldic red, blue, green, gold and silver.     Anglo-Norman soldier and statesman, marshal and then regent of England who served four English monarchs: Henry II, his sons ‘Henry The Young King’, Richard I, and John, and John’s son Henry III.

  • Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester, 1208-1265

    French born populist leader and defender of ‘England for the English’, where people blamed King Henry III‘s misgovernment on his reliance on foreign advisors. Leader of the baronial revolt against the King and ruler of England for less than a year.

  • Humphrey de Bohun, 3rd Earl of Hereford and of Essex, 1249-1298

    £35.00

    One of the principal noblemen who supported King Edward I in his conquest of Wales against Llywelyn ap Gruffydd but who turned against the King over Confirmatio Cartarum (Magna Carta).  For years he held a bitter feud over the Marches with Gilbert, 7th Earl of Gloucester.

  • Hugh Le Despenser, 1st Earl of Winchester, 1261-1326

    Despenser the Elder served Edward I on numerous occasions in battle and as a diplomat.  He was created baron Despenser.  He became chief adviser to Edward II who had a close relationship with his son, Despenser the Younger.

  • Robert de Vere, 9th Earl of Oxford KG, 1362-1392

    A favourite and court companion of King Richard II. He was the ninth Earl of Oxford and the first and only Duke of Ireland and Marquess of Dublin. He was the first person to be created a Marquess.

  • Sir Henry Percy (‘Hotspur’), KG, 1364-1403

    Sir Henry Percy KG, nicknamed Hotspur or Harry Hotspur, was an English knight who fought in several campaigns against the Scots in the northern border and against the French during the Hundred Years’ War. The nickname “Hotspur” was given to him by the Scots as a tribute to his speed in advance and readiness to attack.

  • Sir John Oldcastle, Lord Cobham, 1370-1417

    Friend of King Henry V and  martyred leader of the Lollards, a late medieval sect derived from the teachings of John Wycliffe. He was a  model for 16th-century English dramatic characters, including Shakespeare’s Falstaff.

  • William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk, KG, 1396-1450

    William de la Pole, 1st Duke of Suffolk, KG, nicknamed Jackanapes, was an English magnate, statesman and military commander. He dominated the government of the weak King Henry VIHe was held responsible for England’s defeats in the late stages of the Hundred Years’ War against France.

  • Richard (“The King Maker”) Neville, Earl of Warwick and Salisbury, K.G., 1428-1471

    English nobleman called “the Kingmaker,” in reference to his role as arbiter of royal power during the first half of the Wars of the Roses between the houses of Lancaster and York.   • Richard Wydeville, Earl Rivers, KG, 1405-1469

    Woodville also spelled Wydeville was father-in-law of the Yorkist king Edward IV. Nobles opposed to Rivers initiated the uprising that temporarily drove Edward into exile in 1470.  He fought with distinction jn the last two decades of the Hundred Years’ War  and  married the wealthy Jacquetta of Luxembourg, Duchess of Bedford

  • Henry Stafford, Knight

    Henry Stafford, Duke of Buckingham, KG, 1455-1483

    £35.00

    A leading supporter,  later opponent, of King Richard III. A Lancastrian descendant of King Edward III.  Some of his forebears were killed fighting Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses.  He  was married to Catherine Woodville, sister-in-law of the Yorkist king Edward IV.
